Otherworldly Words: Bewitch

Ah, amore! It’s February and our minds turn to St. Valentine’s Day and longing gazes and tokens of love. But what about when love crosses the line? #OtherworldlyWords returns with a look at four words that describe the downside of love and attraction. First up is bewitch. With its origin in Old English, this word quite literally meant to “enchant” as with witchcraft. Now we think of the word less literally, but what about the almost supernatural power that a beloved can have over another? At times, we can act as if under a spell due to our blind adoration of someone we love. In some cases one’s ardor, can lead to murder in a crime of passion.
